Project 13

Working on A1 studies in ink for Project 13

Project 13 was a project I devised for myself, to give a focus for my exploration of watercolour portraits.

Most of us love taking selfies, we like how you can really control how you look and have fun with filters. You can put a version of yourself out there for others to see.

But Project 13 is about what it’s like to be 13 when there are no filters. Watch the Interview.

Project 13 is a simple idea:

  • I set myself the challenge to paint 13 portraits of 13 year olds from my school whilst I was 13.

  • I invited my followers on Instagram to be part of the project, and after taking their photos, painted them in my own time.

  • I wanted to show everyone what it’s really like to be a teenager – not just the side we decide to let people see.

  • I wanted to try and show the true personality of the sitter.

Several portraits from Project 13 were exhibited online as part of the Royal Academy of Art Young Artist Summer Show 2019, and Anna was exhibited onsite at the Royal Academy and went on to win a President’s Prize.

Project 13 as a whole was exhibited at the Michaelhouse Centre in Cambridge, for two weeks from February 2019.  The work is also shared via a digital gallery.
